Featuring:

Valentino Assenza
Everyone at Artists’ Play is excited to have Valentino back in the house/theatre Melding an acting, and theater arts background with the constant of writing, Valentino Assenza has emerged as an engaging spoken word performer. He takes all the attributes contained within the larger than life presence that he brings on stage, and reaches deep into emotions of happiness, sadness, love, and bleeds his poetry onstage to his audience. A spoken word performance from Valentino, sends you on a roller coaster ride of emotions, you’ll feel like busting a gut laughing one minute, and notice yourself welling up with tears the next. – A writer, poet, and spoken word artist. Valentino again returns to the Cabaret Stage. As we wait in anticipation on what he will say next.

Elizabeth Dawn Snell & Jason Vanstone
Modern Dancers re-visit their roots! In all that they do, they provide passion and inspiration. You think you know what they will do, but you will be very surprised, we promise you. Hint: they will be choreographing the Sound of Music in Hanna, Alberta in September. So what do you think? Will she sing?

Maria Meindl
Always a fantastic performer, we are very happy to have Maria back to perform. Maria will be reading a philosophy essay on artificial intelligence in poetic form, and a comedic monologue on learning to sing — which culminates in a rendition of “You Can’t Get a Man With a Gun.”
Maria Meindl’s essays, poetry and fiction have appeared in numerous journals including The Literary Review of Canada, Descant, Musicworks and Queen Street Quarterly. She is co-publisher of The Writing Space Press. Parent Care, her two-part radio series on siblings caring for their elderly parents was on CBC Ideas in December of 2003. Another series on polio will air in 2007. She is currently at work on Past Forgetting, a biography of her grandmother, the poet and broadcaster Mona Gould. Maria teaches Feldenkrais classes and curates a monthly literary reading series at the Artists’ Play Studio.

Belladonna and The Awakening
The Awakening is an experience – for the players and the audience. Evoking change through word, music, movement and spirit, this organic collective is soul food. Culled from diverse backgrounds, responding to eclectic influences and spreading their versatile wings, the crew shatters boundaries. Genre, race, creed, age, gender, language: irrelevant. Conscience: clear. Function: funk.

Bruce Hunter
“ Oh him! He is very, very funny, and intelligent!” says Artists’ Play goer. Yes, he is! Bruce in one of the longest running Improv troupes in Canada “Illustrated Men” and was also a writer and performer on “After hours” with Kenny Robinson. His favorite thing to do is strange, funny and somewhat disturbing poetry in front of large groups of people.

Open Jam will follow the show, this is your time to play, or just chill/chat/connect!
