Elizabeth Dawn Snell & Jason Vanstone
Modern Dancers re-visit their roots! In all that they do, they provide passion and inspiration. You think you know what they will do, but you will be very surprised, we promise you. Maria Meindl
Always a fantastic performer, we are very happy to have Maria back to perform. Maria will be reading a philosophy essay on artificial intelligence in poetic form, and a comedic monologue on learning to sing — which culminates in a rendition of “You Can’t Get a Man With a Gun.”

She is co-publisher of The Writing Space Press. Parent Care, her two-part radio series on siblings caring for their elderly parents was on CBC Ideas in December of 2003. Another series on polio will air in 2007. She is currently at work on Past Forgetting, a biography of her grandmother, the poet and broadcaster Mona Gould. Maria teaches Feldenkrais classes and curates a monthly literary reading series at the Artists’ Play Studio.

Artists’ Play
…a cabaret!
(No jokeJ)

What do you do with a Saturday night?

  1. Go to a club and have yelling conversations all night, just pretending that you understood that greasy man hitting on you and accidentally say yes to drinks? Yikes!
  2. Stay at home, watch a bad movie on television and wish that you had gone out because now you are so wide awake at 1am and can’t get to sleep, only to go for a walk in the dark cold, being scared by the raccoons waiting in the bushes
    OR……
  3. Spend an evening at Artists’ Play, meet some really cool people, exchange your crazy artistic ideas (or eavesdrop on someone elses) watch some sensual dancing, some funny stories, highly athletic dancing, crazy wicked $*% music, some soothing gentle touching entertainment….
Do you get it yet? It is eclectic! It is everything you want in a package for only $10 if you rsvp!

Hosted by: Elizabeth Dawn Snell
Presenting you with intensely tantalizing dance segments within a show of great talents of wide variety!

His lyrically rich music is full of stories of embracing love, relationships, desire and reflections. His songs exhibit a simple, but raw beauty and uncommon sincerity. We are excited to have Andrew at Artists’ Play this month! To learn more about Andrew Hanna go to www.andrewhannamusic.com

Sharon Fehrmann
Two Sides of Want is a contemporary piece combining dance and spoken verse. It is a story of two very different individuals and their contrasting attitudes towards love and independence.
Dancers: Laura Ovcjak and Jaclyn Smith

Valentino
This spoken word artist has had over 20 pieces of Poetry published in Norman Cristofoli’s Labour Of Love, and has also published two poetry chapbooks of poetry Wandering Absence and most recently Il Ritorno. He has monthly opinion columns, and is the music editor on Rocco De Giacomo’s e-zine Latchkey.net. His track record for performing has landed him features at venues such as the late Idler Pub Clara Blackwood’s Syntactic Sunday at the Freetimes Cafe, Get Your Strap On, We Still Got Words, The Coffeehouse Cabaret and more recently The ArtBar Reading Series.

Jack Cunningham
In story, song and sometimes burlesque Jack continues to explore wider issues of gender and identity as he develops a variety of women for a one-person show. Jack will reveal another aspect of the feminine when Lady Crystal brings her mystic powers to the stage on January 21 st, 2006.

Along the Lines
Singer/Songwriter and Independent dancer, Jason has developed his own music project Along The Lines www.alongthelines.com where he invites other talented musicians to share in the performance of his own compositions.

PERFORMERS:

an intriguing installation piece involving an excerpt from Donna Michelle’s
THE ACADEMY FOR HEIGHTENED CONSCIOUSNESS.

You Said Women?

You said woman

By Lucie Carmen Gregoire

You said woman? Touches on the hyper-sexualized representation of the woman’s body in the public environment and addresses pornography as well as stripping as marketing techniques. This feminist commentary is heavily charged with sexual reference – as is the media – and explores the underlying meanings of sexualized images of women.

In an upcoming sequel to this performance sexual stereotypes of femininity and sexuality will be thrown away, the objectified sexual body will become a contagiously energized woman’s body, providing alternative images to those prevalent in the media.

Original concept, choreography & performance: Lucie Carmen Gregoire
Original score: Samuel Laflamme in collaboration with Dominick Lague
Video editing: Melanie Ladouceur
Costume design: Melanie Turcotte

Toronto Aerial Dance Theatre
Toronto Aerial Dance Theatre bridges the gap between the arts of circus and dance,
to transcend gravity and make use of a greater canvas.

Comfortable Abyss looks at the world in these times of war and terrorism. The dancer will show the frenzy of fear and the ways people seek comfort and protection from a higher power than world leaders, using rituals and religion in the hope they will be extracted from the chaos and brought to a place of solace.

La Onda de Deseo examines the complexity of desire. The dancer expresses raw passion, burning tension and the gratification of living in the moment. The performer of the straps reflects the other side, how one can become restricted by obsession, a slave to its every whim.

Precipice involving the silks, depicts the stages of a relationship between lovers, from early discoveries to the inevitable denouement. While one is reaching out for something more, the other struggles, with both the desire to hold on and the need to let go.

Naomi Maklem
“Unique”
- Art and Dance combined into a visual tapestry. Naomi Macklem presents digital images of her watercolour paintings along with her own improvisational dance style.

Belladonna and The Awakening
Belladonna is a powerful voice for change in the global community. Her versatile dynamic enables listeners to flow smoothly through hip tracks inspired by legends of rock, soul, jazz and folk, while maintaining a consistent sense of purpose and intensity.

The Awakening is the method behind the madness – the melody behind the mojo. These are people engaged in a struggle for liberation from ignorance and suffering.

Of course there will be dancers… who do you think?

Artists’ Play

Performers:

MUTT
Mutt is Toronto’s most unique improv troupe. Comprised of improvisers who are racially, physically and socially diverse, Mutt adheres to the belief that comedy can be done by people of all shapes, colours, and sizes; not just white dudes without disabilities.

Using a variety of audience suggestions and armed with a troupe-wide focus for each show, we create a montage of scenes in which interesting and diverse characters are forced to recon with issues that we face as a society.

Jason Vanstone and Elizabeth Dawn Snell
Dancers without fear or boundaries explore intensity in play.
Jason and Elizabeth both currently dance with DLNW dance company and explore many collaborations with Artists’ Play Collective.

Michael Kelly
Michael is an independent, acoustic alt.pop artist based in Toronto, Ontario. After writing songs and playing guitar for many years, Michael finally emerged onto the Toronto music scene in 2004. He cut his performing teeth on the open stage circuit, and soon after started playing his own shows. H is sound represents a distinct expression of alt.pop sensibilities: melodic and passionate songwriting; a powerful singing voice; solid, intense

guitar-playing; and a raw, stripped-down acoustic format

“Meet some real characters!”
Jack Cunningham
Jack is exploring gender and identity as he develops his one-person show, playing an assortment of women. In a theatrical monologue, each one reveals a facet of the feminine, followed by an original song and a burlesque number. “
On November 19 th , 2005 Jack is introducing two of his characters.
Liberaca in the first half of the show and Pearl in the second, eat your heart out Dame Edna!

Clara Engel
Local toronto musician/poet/brilliant enigma of raw soul” Clara Engel writes music that defies genre. Elements of blues, cabaret, and folk can all be detected in her sound. Live, she has the ability to transform the audience. She is an intuitive composer of haunting tone-poetry, an expressionistic guitarist, and a powerful vocalist. She has released a four song e.p. and is preparing to record a full length album.
Clara Engel is 22 and lives and goes to school in Toronto, Ontario.

Show ‘N’ Prov
Show ‘n’ Prov, Toronto’s urban comedy crew, is a unique assortment of badly behaved women with remarkable wit and insight. Performing at Tim Sims Playhouse quarterly since 1999, the ever-changing troupe is unstoppable in their resolve to rouse guilty laughter at somber realities. The ladies (and occasional gentlemen) have been known to take cracks at date rape, homelessness, drug abuse, eating disorders, health care cuts, nuclear arms race, and sometimes even the heavy stuff.

Artists’ Play

The cabaret style performance series!
A night of fabulous entertainment followed by an open improv jam!

Performers:

A special preview  performance of a brand new solo show that is
about to be mounted at the Montreal GLBT Theatre festival.

Lady in Waiting

Written and performed by Charles Hayter
Dramaturgy by Judith Thompson
Directed by Victoria Goring

One man: Two Identities
Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Miss Kandi Kane! – a loud-mouthed drag queen, as she copes with the trials and tribulations of organizing a tribute to her Drag Mother, the Princess.

VIVID, COMPELLING and COMPLEX
“Mr Hayter is a writer with a wonderfully distinctive voice. The character he has created for this solo show is vivid, compelling, complex, and utterly fascinating. The combination of drag queen and professional is surprising, and subversive – in that it holds up to the audience that what we think of as the fringe of society, and what we think of as the very centre, can be one and the same thing – human. I was touched, and entertained.” – Ross Manson, Artistic Director, Volcano
www.villagescene.com

Justina Szecsi
Performing an excerpt from her award winning one-woman show, The Complications of an Average Existence ; A powerful story about four heartbreaking and hilarious women who must face the choices that they’ve made, the things in life they can’t control and those little moments that make you believe in magic.
The Complications of an Average Existence will be making its
Toronto debut at Artists’ Play Studio Theatre starting September 25 th.

Justina has performed throughout Montreal, New York and Toronto for the past 15 years. She is a founder of Penelope’s Production and Co-founder of Circe Productions.

Artists’ Play

The cabaret style performance series!
A night of fabulous entertainment followed by an open improv jam!

Performers:

Floxy
With her indefinable style, Floxy has touched audiences in Toronto, Peterborough and Waterloo with her big voice and raw lyrics. Between bands, she returns to her acapella roots, belting out her original
jazzy/bluesy/folky songs solo. She is looking for accompaniment so get in touch if you hear guitar riffs in your head when you listen to her sing. Floxy can be reached at floxy111@hotmail.com

QR5
http://www.qr5.com

“Folk/funk phenomenon mixes mellow grooves and vocal harmonies with tight rhythms and deep thoughts.”

“Acoustic-ambient folk collides with a funk and reggae rhythm section. Atmospheric lead guitar fleshes out an aggressive acoustic, while reggae beats and a melodic but funky bass energize the sound. Introspective music that still rocks the house.”

Janice Israeloff
Janice is happy to perform  ‘act 1′ of her show ‘I’ve been trying to pass my driving test since 1978 again after having just finished a run of it at The Slaw Festival.    She has been acting for 20 years mostly in other people plays and has toured across Ontario performing for kids, been a clown, dinner theatre, and worked in film and t.v.  Her own plays have been seen at The Annex Theatre, Theatre Passe Murraille, the Toronto Fringe Festivals ’03, ’04. Janice has taught acting to children for the Catholic Seperate School Board, The New School of Drama, and Awe! Theatre School.

Along The Lines
Feel good acoustic rock is the essence of what Jason Vanstone has created, “Along the Lines”. This performance of original music in collaboration with members of QR5 will surely please your entertainment cravings!

Jenny Cobb and her Posse of Dancers!!!
Jenny Cobb, Wendy Buchoon, Jeanelle Julien, Jennifer Lo, Leslie Dupuy will be performing hip hop choreographed by Jenny Cobb.

Alice Lu
Performing a fun and sassy solo to Madonna’s Express Yourself. Alice started training at Artists’ Play Studio Theatre in October of last year. This will be Alice’s second performance at Artists’ Play Studio Theatre. Choreography by Elizabeth Dawn Snell

TERMINAL 5.
|Choreographed by: Donna Michelle and Elizabeth Dawn Snell
Performed by: Donna Michelle
Accompanied by: Elizabeth Dawn Snell and Matt Maaskant
Perception/projection/preconception/past experience…Terminal 5 is a study in baggage. How we check it, store it, wear it, live it and allow ourselves to be crushed by the weight – or strengthened.

GRASPING FOR DISTRACTION
Choreographer and performer: Elizabeth Dawn Snell
Drum: Matt Maaskant
CD Compilation: Ben Bootsma
Shall we reach the epitome of craziness in order to free ourselves from our own device? This piece explores how far one has to go into their distraction, becoming lifeless and unemotional until the breaking point. As long as we don’t forget, we can return to what we wanted in the first place.

After the show join us in a magical open improv jam. Dancers and musicians connect spontaneously through creativity. Sit back and chill, have a chance to chat with the artists and join us in this merriment J

“Those of whom have stubbornly stuck it out have enriched contemporary theatre by being willing to pledge heart, soul, mind, strength and lonliness to the sometime wickedness of that whore.
